Our People: Keystone Q&A
Betsy Minnick is Keystone’s President and second-generation owner. We recently sat down with Betsy to learn more about who she is and what she does for the company.
Betsy, what do you do at Keystone?
My current title is President, but I’ve spent time as a sales rep, “the Girl in HR,” and Vice President. I have the ultimate responsibility for everything that happens here—safety, production, shipping, sales, quality, finances, purchasing, planning, legal compliance, and training.
What's your background?
When people ask me how long I’ve worked at Keystone my answer is “since kindergarten.” I was in kindergarten when my father bought our previous building. We were the first tenants, so the offices were just cinder block and cement. I remember spending afternoons with a coffee can half-full of paint in one hand and a little paint brush in the other, painting the alphabet on the bare cinder blocks, only to return the next day to a fully painted wall with no evidence of my hard work.
My education and work experience prior to joining Keystone as my “real job” were in social work. I have a bachelor’s degree in social work and a master’s degree in social and economic development. Most of my work experience was in hospitals. That may seem like a funky jump—from the orthopedic unit to the production floor—but the skills necessary in social work, including listening, empathy, planning, communicating, and gentle truth-telling, are also very necessary in business. At its heart, business is about people—team members, customers, venders, and competitors. The skills of social work have translated nicely to my business role.
Tell us about something you're working on for Keystone right now:
We have plans to add a new product line and division to Keystone in 2025. I will be leading this project.
What's your favorite part of the job at Keystone?
#1 – The people.
#2 – Getting to brag about my team and the quality of our products.
What's something non-work related that we should know about you?
I am a big marching band nerd. I love a good halftime show, a good drum line, and I especially love a good marching band contest. The more precise the better. And, I will admit that the dotting of the I during the Ohio State Marching Band pregame show brings a tear to my eye…every time.
